ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Taiwan won its first-ever Olympic gold medals Thursday and was honored with a medal ceremony featuring a national anthem and flag that is not its own.

The medals came in quick succession on the first day of the taekwondo competition.

Chen Shih Hsin won the historic first gold in the womens 49-kilogram category, and then heavily favored Chu Mu Yen followed suit about 20 minutes later in the mens 58-kg class.

Several hundred Taiwanese fans in attendance went wild after the victories were clinched, but the celebration turned more muted when the medal ceremony began.

As part of its sovereignty dispute with China, Taiwan is not permitted to use its actual flag and anthem in international competitions. Instead, Chen and Chu had to watch as a more generic Taiwanese Olympic flag, featuring the Olympic rings, was raised to the tune of the Song of the national flag.

Chen cried throughout the medal ceremony, while Chu was more composed.

I would like to dedicate this medal to everyone in Taiwan, Chen said. Im pretty sure that everyone in Taiwan will be happy for the gold medals won today.

Taiwan and China have been locked in a sovereignty dispute for five decades. Beijing says the island belongs to Chinese territory and must accept Communist rule or face war.

But the Taiwanese have refused to join the mainland and have been drifting closer to seeking a permanent break.

台灣和中國幾十年來一直有主權爭議, 為了妥協, 台灣只能以中華台北的名義參加奧運.

但是台灣人民不願意向中國屈服, 也一步一步的走向和中國永遠分離的另一條路.

As a concession to China, Taiwan participates at the Olympics under the name of Chinese, Taipei instead of its official name of the Republic of China.

Chu began his winners press conference by declaring in English: I am from Taiwan.

朱木炎在記者會第一句話用英文說: 我是台灣來的.

朱木炎的翻譯是中國人, 他不希望他的話被誤翻.

His translator was Chinese and he apparently did not want the message said any other way.

I must thank my family and my government, he said, continuing in his native language.

Lin Chieh Yu, a reporter for the Taipei Times, said that millions of Taiwanese watched the victories at home on TV, where it was just past midnight.

Lin sketched a version of Taiwans actual flag on a notebook. It is mostly red, with a blue square in the top left corner that contains a white sun.

The blue represents the sky, the white sun the future and the red recalls our founding fathers and their sacrifices they made to build this country. Our ground is full of their blood, he said.

Lin added that the real celebration would have to wait until the winning duo returns home.

I think there will be thousands of Taiwanese people waiting for them in the airport, he said. They will become national heroes.

Chu won his gold by defeating Oscar Francisco Salazar of Mexico 5-1. Tamer Bayoumi of Egypt got the bronze.

Chen beat Yanelis Yuliet Labrada of Cuba 5-4 in the final. Labrada got the silver medal and Yaowapa Boorapolchai of Thailand got the bronze.

Chens bout was the more compelling of the two gold medal contests. She was leading 6-4 as the clock was running out and then was given a one-point deduction for an illegal maneuver. She managed to hold on, however, and was wrapped with a long hug by her coach immediately afterward, as tears fell down her cheeks.

After the games, Chen said she would pursue a doctorate in sports physiology.

Chu, who entered as a favorite after winning the flyweight class at the 2001 worlds, methodically fought off Salazar.

After a scoreless first round -- taekwondo fights last three rounds -- Chu took control with three unanswered points in the middle frame. Afterward, his coach picked him up and spun him around in celebration. The pair was so excited that they could not find the correct exit at first.

Taiwan began competing in the Olympics at the 1960 Rome Games, where Yang Chuan Kwang won the countrys first medal, a silver, in a stirring decathlon duel with Rafer Johnson.

At the 1976 Montreal Games, Canada denied Taiwan the right to compete under the name Republic of China. Taiwan withdrew from the competition on the grounds that

the Canadians were bowing to political pressure from communist China in what is supposed to be an apolitical event.

Likewise, Taiwan did not field athletes in the 1980 Moscow Games

27日20日，台灣參加奧運四十四年以來，第一面及第二面金牌誕生了。
分別是跆拳道女子49公斤級的陳詩欣(26歲)和跆拳道男子58公斤級的
朱木炎(22歲)。

這是在夢中也不能描繪的金牌授獎儀式。「失去國家的悲哀」下的首面金牌。

替代台灣國旗而被升起的是台灣奧運委員會會旗，替代台灣國歌被演奏的
是IOC准許的國旗歌(Song of the national flag)。演奏時不禁流淚的陳選手在記者招待會場上仍雙眼微紅充血，斷斷續續的說話者。

擔心被外國記者團誤認為中國選手的朱選手，直接用英文說「Im from Taiwan。」
，同時會場上也飄盪者悲壯感。

台灣在國際大會上很少能使用國旗及國歌，並且，國名中華民國(Republic of
China)和台灣(Taiwan)被中華台北(Chinese Taipei)代替使用。

兩位選手是這次奧運中台灣的英雄。可是比起取得金牌的喜悅，取得金牌
仍不能以祖國的國旗和國歌來誇耀國家的悲傷好像更大。

應該明亮地笑的選手，在不是台灣國旗的台灣奧林匹克旗升上之時忽然嗚咽..
